Catching up with John Newman

Taking a look ahead to the 2018 class, we were able to catch up with John Newman (Greensboro Day School, NC). Newman is an extremely versatile G/F, that we feel could end up being a top 100 recruit in the 2018 class when it’s all said and done. Currently 247 Sports has him ranked at #120 overall in the 2018 class.

That 2018 class for Mark Price and company is shaping up to be a big class–as the roster stands today, there are 7 open spots slated for when it becomes time to fill out the 2018 class.

SoC: Can you list out the offers you currently have?

JN: I currently have offers from UNC-Charlotte, Boston College, Old Dominion, James Madison, Cincinnati,Wake Forest, Providence and Clemson.

Friendly reminder that Charlotte was the first program to offer Newman, back in July of 2015

SoC: Are there any programs standing out to you at this time in the recruitment process?

JN: Honestly, all the programs that have offered me at this point are big standouts for me.

SoC: For those that haven’t been able to see you play in person, how would you best define your game?

JN: I would best describe my game as versatile and efficient. I can do anything my coaches need me to do on the floor that game. I can handle the ball, push it in transition, shoot from all levels on the floor, get to the basket, I LOVE getting my teammates involved and making them better. I can defend multiple positions.

SoC: Is there anyone you model your game after?

JN: I kind of try to model my game after Demar Derozan

SoC: Outside of basketball, what activities/hobbies do you enjoy?

JN: I enjoy just spending time with family and friends. I try to keep those that have been there with me my whole life close. Occasionally I party but I’m more of a home body.

SoC: Xbox One or PS4?

SoC: What might you like to major in once you hit college?

JN: I want to major in Business

SoC: Favorite meal?

JN: My favorite meal is my moms Fried Chicken w Rice , Gravy, Mac and Cheese , and cooked spinach . DELICIOUS!

SoC: Top 3 movies?

JN: My top three movies I’d have to say are… Takers, The Purge : Election Year, and ALI

After we caught up with Newman, Phenom Hoop Report tweeted that he’ll be visiting (unofficial) Providence in January.

Newman informed us that he has no other visits planned at this time.
